Coquito is the Holiday Drink You Have to Try (Vegan)

‘Tis the season for friends, family, food, and of course, beverages. Whether you need something special to toast long-awaited reunions, to impress the new bf/gf’s clan, or just escape your own with, we’ve partnered with our Miami neighbors at Coconut Cartel to create a decadent must try for you—the coquito.

Made with Coconut Cartel’s single-origin Guatemalan añejo rum infused with real coconut water, JOI Almond and Cashew nutbases, and sweet coconut cream, our unique take on the coquito is going to ruin eggnog for you forever (we’re not sorry).

But first, a little history lesson—because there’s a lot of it associated with this drink. The coquito is the traditional Puerto Rican holiday drink that’s usually served as an after-dinner aperitif (sounds like our kind of dessert). Coquito isn’t a thing you’re going to find premade and mass-marketed. Most Puerto Rican families—including those here in our hometown of Miami—have their own secret recipe, made just once a year and handed down and shared with friends. No one really knows what genius bartender first concocted this drink, but everyone loves it.

For us at JOI and at Coconut Cartel, we love the history behind the drink. We’re both proud members of the Miami community, and being surrounded by so many diverse cultures and traditions is one of the things that makes this city great. Even cooler? Watching all of these rich traditions collide with the latest trends and pure creativity of Miami residents.

Here in Miami, there’s always respect for tradition, but there’s never a status quo. That’s just how we like it, and just what we set out to create with our JOI + Coconut Cartel take on the coquito. It’s a unique, innovative, and absolutely delicious take on a classic, and we think it’s going to bring a whole new level of merry to your holiday season.

Not a fan of spiking your nog?  Keep it virgin, simply omit the rum and add an extra half cup of water instead.  You can even use it as a coffee creamer!

Here’s how you make the JOI + Coconut Cartel Coquito.
