Does JOI need to be refrigerated?

Refrigeration is not necessary - all of JOI's products are shelf stable, and can be stored in your pantry (please check the expiration date for Use By dates). However, storing them in your refrigerator can help to extend shelf life, and keeps the products in a more controlled state. Pro tip: keeping the paste products in the fridge makes them easier to scoop!

Once you’ve blended JOI with water, however, you will need to refrigerate the milk. Store JOI plant milk in the fridge for up to 7 days in an airtight container, and as always with natural products, shake before use.

What is the shelf life of JOI plant bases?

Each of our flavors have a different shelf life, depending on the ingredients. Because we use whole, all natural (and typically, just one) ingredient, we rely on the self-preserving properties each one offers - without the use of added preservatives:

Almond Bases (conventional and organic): 18 months*

Cashew Bases (conventional and organic): 12 months*

Organic Hemp Base: 18 months*

Hazelnut Creamer Base: 9 months*

Organic Oat Milk Powder: 9 months*

Please check the expiration date on your item for the most accurate Use By date. These dates apply, even after opening. Just make sure the container is properly sealed and stored in a cool dark place, and avoid direct sunlight and any moisture within the container.

Do I need a blender to use JOI?

For the best results when using our paste concentrates, we would recommend using a countertop or immersion blender for up to 30 seconds to yield a smooth, creamy and consistent plant milk.

Please note, blending for longer than 45 seconds on high power may affect the flavor and shelf life.


Our powders concentrates do not need to be blended and work best when stirred with hot liquid.

Does milk made with JOI separate?

Yes - because all our products are made with 100% natural and whole ingredients, and do not contain binders, gums or additives, the resulting blended milks will separate after some time. Just give it a good shake and you're good to go!

Is there cross-contamination between your products and any other nuts?

Our products are processed in a facility that also processes dairy, eggs, tree nuts and wheat. However, between each production run, we go through an extensive cleaning and sanitization process to ensure that there is no cross contamination. If the allergy is severe, we would suggest you not to take the risk - as much as we would love for you to try JOI!

How are JOI bases, in paste form, different from nut butters?

Let’s take a look at four things that set JOI nut bases apart from nut butters—and why JOI is better to make, better to drink, and better for you.

1. With JOI, you’ll never have to worry about a gritty nut milk consistency

JOI nut bases are made from 100% nuts—never salted, never roasted, never anything-ed. And, our process* of cold-milling and steam pasteurizing was designed with nut milking as the goal, creating a base that is as close to raw as you can get while still being FDA-certified safe to consume.

2. JOI’s process releases nut enzymes and boosts nutrition

Nuts are super nutritious, but they’ve got some natural defenses to keep all that healthful goodness to themselves. To unlock their full healthy punch, nuts must be activated—stimulated to produce essential enzymes that make digestion and nutrient absorption easier for our bodies. JOI’s process including steam pasteurization takes care of this by blanching nuts to remove their skin--and we only use blanched nuts in our nut bases.

3. JOI nut bases aren’t butter—and they’ll never act like it

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) specifically calls out texture and consistency in its definition of nut butters: “The nut butters and nut spreads shall spread easily and shall not be thin or more than slightly stiff.” This doesn’t describe JOI nut bases, and we don’t want it to. Our nut bases are intended to be strong, thick, and scooped right out of their package and into a blender with water and whatever else your heart desires. To make delicious, consistent nut milk—not buttermilk.

4. JOI nut bases are designed, produced, and priced to be made into nut milk
